A Disciple Making Movement (DMM) is a strategy for evangelism and disciple-making that aims to rapidly multiply disciples and churches in a particular region or people group.
It involves a simple and reproducible process of sharing the Gospel, making disciples, forming new groups of believers, and training them to repeat the process with others.
The goal is to create a self-sustaining movement that can spread throughout a region or even a nation, with minimal reliance on outside resources or leadership.
A DMM typically involves small, organic groups of believers who meet regularly for Bible study, prayer, and fellowship, and who are empowered to share their faith and make disciples in their own social networks.
The DMM approach emphasizes obedience to the teachings of Jesus, reliance on the power of the Holy Spirit, and a focus on making multiplying disciples, rather than just accumulating church members.
What is a Church Planting Movement/CPM?
CPM stands for "Church Planting Movements." It is a term used to describe a phenomenon where large numbers of churches are planted in a relatively short amount of time, often in previously unreached or resistant areas. CPMs typically involve the rapid multiplication of new believers and new churches, often through a process of disciple-making that emphasizes obedience to the teachings of Jesus, reliance on the power of the Holy Spirit, and a focus on making multiplying disciples, rather than just accumulating church members.
CPMs are characterized by a few key elements, including:
CPMs have been documented in many parts of the world, including Asia, Africa, and Latin America, and they are often associated with the use of Discovery Bible Study (DBS) and other simple, reproducible methods of evangelism and discipleship.
What is the difference between DMM and CPM?
Disciple Making Movements (DMM) and Church Planting Movements (CPM) are related concepts that share many similarities, but there are some key differences between them.
DMMs focus primarily on making multiplying disciples who are empowered to share their faith and make more disciples, often through the use of simple, reproducible methods of evangelism and discipleship. The emphasis is on individual spiritual transformation and obedience to the teachings of Jesus, with the goal of creating a movement of disciples that can rapidly multiply across a region or people group.
CPMs, on the other hand, are focused more specifically on the rapid multiplication of churches, often as a result of the growth of a DMM. The emphasis is on planting new churches and raising up indigenous leaders who can oversee the growth of these new churches. CPMs may use many of the same methods and strategies as DMMs, but their primary goal is the planting of new churches, rather than just the making of new disciples.
Another difference between DMMs and CPMs is the scope of their focus. DMMs may be focused on making multiplying disciples within a particular social network or community, while CPMs are typically focused on planting churches within a particular geographic area or people group.
In summary, while DMMs and CPMs share many similarities and may use many of the same methods and strategies, the primary focus of DMMs is on making multiplying disciples, while the primary focus of CPMs is on planting new churches.
In DOVE, we have multiple CPMs/DMMs. Mainly in South East Asia, but also in Europe this approach is working very well.
